Fine crafts · Lorraine
At the foot of the Vosges, a handful of villages gave birth to the greatest crystal houses in the world. Baccarat, Daum, Saint-Louis: a route of fire and light.
Lorraine is the land of French crystal. To follow this route is to travel back to the sources of a craft inscribed in the heritage of humanity.
There is in Lorraine a secret geography, that of the crystal works. Between the forests of the Vosges and the valleys of the Meurthe and the Sarre, the furnaces have burned for centuries. It is here, far from the great capitals, that some of the most prestigious houses in the world were born — those whose chandeliers illuminate the finest palaces and tables.

Baccarat, Daum, Saint-Louis: these names evoke excellence in its purest form. Together, they trace a genuine crystal route, an itinerary where one measures the patience, precision and beauty of a craft carried to its summit.
Baccarat, the legend born in 1764
It all began in 1764, when King Louis XV authorised the creation of a glassworks in the village of Baccarat, in Meurthe-et-Moselle. Crystal production began in 1816, and the house has never since ceased to push the limits of its art. Monumental chandeliers, table services for the royal courts, perfume flacons: Baccarat became synonymous with prestige around the world.
The village itself lives to the rhythm of its manufacture. One still senses that intimate bond between a territory and a craft, that transmission passing through generations of artisans.

Within the École de Nancy, it carried the technique of pâte de verre to a rare level of excellence, creating pieces with subtle colours and plant-inspired forms drawn from nature. Even today, Daum collaborates with contemporary artists, perpetuating this dialogue between tradition and creation.
Nancy, capital of Art Nouveau, is worth the detour in its own right: its architectural heritage tells the golden age of a city that made decorative art a true philosophy.
Saint-Louis, the doyenne of crystal works
In Saint-Louis-lès-Bitche, in the Moselle, the glassworks has existed since 1586. It was here that the first French crystal was produced, in 1781 — making Saint-Louis the oldest crystal works in France. Nestled in the heart of the Northern Vosges forests, the manufacture perpetuates age-old techniques, notably that of paperweights and the coloured pieces that are its signature.
