France’s oldest Christmas market draws enormous crowds every year. AC PRIVATE - A List concierge, founded in Strasbourg, explains how to experience the Christkindelsmärik differently: insider timing, a hotel in the heart of the Grande Île, guided visits and carefully chosen tables.

Strasbourg · Christkindelsmärik · The private way

Strasbourg calls itself the capital of Christmas, and rightly so. Yet the city worth loving in December is not the one of packed Saturday afternoons. It is the one of blue mornings over the cathedral, quiet lanes in Petite France and warm dinners while the crowds pass by outside.

A market born in 1570

The Christkindelsmärik — the “Christ Child’s market” — is documented as far back as 1570. It settled on Place Broglie and gradually spread across the whole Grande Île, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Place de la Cathédrale, Place du Château, Petite France and Place Kléber with its great tree. The market traditionally runs from late November to 24 December. At the time of writing, the city had not yet published the 2026 calendar; we confirm it before any programme.

What changes when you do it privately

Timing

We schedule the squares early in the day and on weekdays, when the aisles can breathe. Afternoons are kept for indoor pleasures: museums, tea rooms, artisan workshops and Alsace wine tastings.

Logistics

During the market the Grande Île becomes a secured pedestrian zone. A private driver drops you at the authorised points, takes care of your purchases and waits for the next stop. Arrivals are arranged from the high-speed rail station, Strasbourg-Entzheim airport, or Basel-Mulhouse and Frankfurt airports.

Where to stay and dine

Characterful hotels in the centre, private apartments, or a residence outside the city if you prefer calm. Tables range from historic winstubs to gastronomic houses, all booked well ahead for December evenings.
