Long before video refereeing, Breitling took on a singular challenge: timing the two 45-minute halves of a football match. From the 34-41 "Referee" reference to the 2025 NFL partnership, a look back at a little-known chapter of watchmaking history — and the art of accessing these rare timepieces with AC Private, the reference luxury concierge.

Long before smartwatches and video refereeing, a handful of watchmaking houses took on a singular challenge: timing, to the second, the two halves of a football match. Breitling was among them, with referee chronographs that have since become sought-after collector's pieces. A look back at a little-known chapter of watchmaking history — and how to access these treasures with AC Private.

Football: a timing challenge like no other

A football match is played in two 45-minute halves. This unusual duration inspired several great watchmaking houses, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, to create dedicated instruments: the famous soccer timers, or referee chronographs. Where a standard chronograph counts minutes on a sub-dial, these watches had to let the referee follow the passage of the regulation three-quarters of an hour at a single glance.

Breitling's answer: the "slow" chronograph and the reference 34-41 "Referee"

To meet this need, Breitling drew on its "slow" chronograph movement, already used in the reference 2005 SuperOcean. Around 1970, the house unveiled the reference 34-41 "Referee", designed for the man with the whistle.

Its genius lies in its legibility. Rather than a small counter, Breitling used a centrally mounted chronograph hand sweeping directly across the dial on a 0-to-45-minute scale. A red chapter ring highlighted the length of a half, while an aperture above 6 o'clock told the referee the status of the timing: a large green dot when running, a smaller one when paused, and a black background once reset. Everything here was designed for instant reading on the pitch.

Breitling, Omega, Heuer: three schools for one field

Breitling was not alone on this very particular field. Each house had its own answer:

  • Breitling — the central hand on a 0–45 scale and the aperture indicator, for maximum legibility.
  • Omega — its "Soccer Timer" line (references 145.016, 145.019, 145.020) added a "45" marker to the 30-minute sub-dial of a classic chronograph.
  • Heuer — rather than chronographs, the house produced dedicated mechanical wrist stopwatches for referees, prized for their simplicity.

Three philosophies, one quest: to master the time of the game with the elegance of fine watchmaking.

The Top Time, Breitling's sporting DNA

This chronograph culture is rooted in an iconic collection: the Top Time, launched in 1964. A young, bold chronograph with a two-register layout, it made its mark in motor racing and even in cinema — on James Bond's wrist in Thunderball. Reissued today with manufacture movements, it carries on the vintage, racy spirit that is the house's signature.

2025: Breitling steps onto the NFL field

The story of sporting timekeeping at Breitling has a new chapter. In August 2025, the house became the first official luxury timepiece partner of the NFL. A multi-year global deal offering two models in 32 editions, one per franchise:

  • Chronomat Automatic GMT 40 "NFL Team Edition" — 40 mm steel case, COSC-certified Breitling Caliber 32, team logo engraved on the caseback.
  • Endurance Pro "NFL Team Edition" — 44 mm titanium, COSC-certified SuperQuartz™ Caliber 82, Pantone-accurate team colours.

From the referee's whistle to the NFL stadium, Breitling confirms one conviction: sport and fine watchmaking share the same devotion to precision.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Breitling referee chronograph?

What is the difference between Breitling, Omega and Heuer referee watches?

Breitling favoured a central hand and an aperture indicator; Omega added a "45" marker to a classic 30-minute sub-dial; Heuer produced dedicated mechanical wrist stopwatches rather than full chronographs.

Is Breitling an NFL partner?

Yes. Since August 2025, Breitling has been the first official luxury timepiece partner of the NFL, with two models offered in 32 team editions: the Chronomat Automatic GMT 40 and the Endurance Pro.
